What were the qualities of the best presentations we've seen?

  • You can take it back to your classroom: Learn it today, use it tomorrow
  • Real-life examples: taps into our own experiences, helps to think about how to tailor this for your classroom; student artifacts, logistics,
  • Something that sparks an idea; having time to think and write and talk about it
  • Characteristics: working with colleagues, a community, tends to make it better
  • Purpose, Audience, whose there: you have to adjust for your MAPS
  • When teachers choose to be there it is usually makes it better
  • Making things interactive as possible
What were the qualities of the worst presentations we've seen?

  • The presenter has no spark; can't connect
  • The person has to be enthusiastic

  • What makes a person legitimate: how did people use it in their own classroom? You have no idea what the kids are like in my classroom!
  • They don't honor where we are coming from
  • The person brought brochures on her credentials; didn't work!!
  • There are issues of respect; facilitator versus presenter aspect.
  • Most PDs are bad: as a presenter, your audience expects the worst, so they are 'naughty,' the clusters that feed that.

Does and Don’ts

  • Start where people are. There is a big learning curve to learn new technology. We are dealing with the digital divide -- digital natives vs digital immigrants. Immigrants always speak with an accent. There is always a bit of discomfort. This divide also exists between teachers and students.
  • Start with a writing prompt and allow them to do it with paper and pencil or on computer. This makes them comfortable with the situation.
    Here is the skill. Here is what it looks like in classroom. Here’s how it works. I want you to try it.
    Crash Course 1st. Here’s how you do this. (Watch or note things) Screen cast and step by step instructions for everything. Step by step. Screen shots (taken one screen on jing) are diff than screen cast, then step by step direction on power pts. Use all on power pt. so they don’t have to watch the whole
    Put a challenge up for digital natives. = 2 levels of tasks makes a huge difference. You are in charge of your learning today. You will have time to play with it today so you can learn to use it so you can go back to use it in your classroom.
    Set up as much as possible before they come to the class. Ask them to sign up for the site before they come (jing, googledocs)
    This expands the classroom beyond the 4 walls.
