Thoughts and Ideas from Our Discussion on Conferring (November 10, 2007)

  • When conferring, have a physical signal (sign, hat, etc) that shows we are working with other students
  • Work quickly with the teacher moving to the students
  • Sharing our own journals
  • Spelling -- having lists of commonly used words for children to refer to
  • Holding students accountable with signing their names, different colored ink, sliding papers into transparent sleeves
  • Keep the comments to themselves until the end of the read around
  • Fishbowl Model
    • Author picks focus
    • Author reads aloud; responders listen and take notes
    • Responders talk; author takes notes
    • Author ends conversation, suggesting where she/he will go next
  • Thoughts on Conferencing
    • Being able to apply these ideas immediately to see what will happen
    • Using these strategies to look at specific parts so students can look at specific items (grammar, author's craft)
